The brass compass detail is what finally cracked it for me, once I stopped treating it like decoration and started reading it as an actual hint. Took three evenings, and I'm not usually one to sit that long with a puzzle.
I've been stuck on this puzzle for hours, but that's exactly what I was hoping for. The brass compass design gives just enough of a hint without spoiling the challenge—definitely one of the toughest I've ever tackled.
