A celebration of the things that endure. In Maintenance: Of Everything, Part One, Stewart Brand turns his attention to an often-overlooked truth: creating something is only the beginning. The real work lies in caring for it. Drawing from architecture, infrastructure, technology, ecology, and everyday life, Brand explores the quiet discipline of maintenance—the people, systems, and philosophies that keep our world functioning long after the excitement of invention has faded. Thoughtful, wide-ranging, and deeply optimistic, this first volume challenges our culture's obsession with the new, arguing instead for stewardship, longevity, and continual improvement. A fascinating read for designers, makers, tinkerers, and anyone who believes that preserving something can be just as creative as building it.

This book made me actually stop and look at how I maintain my tools and home systems—the chapter on caring for a wooden handle alone was worth the price. It’s a slow, thoughtful read, not a quick self-help fix, and that’s exactly why it stuck with me.

I've been thinking differently about my old tools and furniture ever since I started this book

George ★★★★☆

The chapter on how buildings outlive their builders completely changed how I think about repair work. My only gripe is that Part One ends right when the infrastructure discussion gets going, so I'm already ordering the next volume.
