These tactile objects are meant to nourish your sense of balance and creativity, while also transporting you back to that river where you stacked stones as high as you could.

Designed by Nara-based studio A4, tumi-isi (積み石; 'stacking stones' in Japanese) are a set of 5 blocks individually hand bevelled into asymmetrical shapes by local artisans. Made from the finest woods of Yoshino Cedar and Yoshino Cypress, the blocks are coated with natural pigments making them safe, and fun, for all ages.

My toddler stacks these for maybe ten minutes before knocking them down, then starts over — that's a win in my book. The uneven shapes make balancing genuinely tricky, which keeps her interested way longer than regular blocks.

I bought these for my desk and keep catching myself stacking them during calls. The wood is smoother than I expected and each piece has just enough weight to feel satisfying in the hand. My nephew ignored his tablet for a solid twenty minutes to build with them, which honestly says it all.

My kid has played with these every day since they arrived, and the smooth, rounded edges make them feel safe for a toddler to handle. The only downside is that a couple of the smaller pieces are easy to lose under the couch. Still, they've held up well and the natural finish looks nice sitting out o
