Category: Visual Artwork

Created by Ivan Moscovich in his home studio using an elaborate double-pendulum drawing mechanism of his own design. Artist, inventor, author and Holocaust survivor, Moscovich patented his Harmonograph in 1967 and slowly honed the precise techniques required to master his innovative "cybernetic" approach to drawing. The machine produces two-dimensional oscillations which mathematicians refer to as Lissajous figures. Through variations of color, shape and composition, Moscovich was able to achieve a striking visual diversity in his images. The drawing process was time-consuming and required extensive experimentation to execute each concept successfully. For this reason, the artist never produced copies of his works. Each signed Moscovich Harmonogram is unique in the truest sense of the word, there is no other like it. Colored marker on art-board. 24 x 24 inches.

The double-pendulum mechanism he built himself gives these lines a hypnotic, organic flow that no digital print could ever replicate. It hangs in my hallway and every guest stops to ask about the backstory, which is half the magic. A piece that rewards both a glance and a long look.

I’ve stared at it for an hour and still keep finding new overlaps and tiny loops in the lines. Knowing it came from a hand-built double-pendulum rig makes every stroke feel like a captured moment of chance.

I've been staring at the intricate pendulum lines for days and keep noticing new layers in the composition each time. Knowing it was drawn by a handmade mechanical device in Moscovich's own studio makes the precision feel even more remarkable.
