Himitsu Bako Puzzle Box, 5 Sun

The Yosegi marquetry on the lid is genuinely stunning up close, and you can feel how precisely the sliding panels fit together. Took me a solid twenty minutes to crack it open, which felt just right for the size.

I bought this as a gift and ended up keeping it for myself, the sliding panel mechanism is so smooth you barely feel where one piece ends and the next begins. The 5 sun size gives it real weight on a shelf, and the Hakone craftsmanship shows in every joint.

The sliding mechanism has just enough resistance that you really have to think about each move, which is exactly what I wanted from a 5 sun box. Took me about twenty minutes to open it the first time, and the joinery feels rock solid.
